About Attorney Sue Phillips Hammann

Ms.Susan L. Phillips Hammann attended Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles, receiving her JD degree in 1991.  While at Southwestern she was the Operations Editor for Adelphia Law Journal, Volume 6, a publication of Delta Theta Phi.  In 1992 her student article Chromosome Loophole was published by Adelphia Law Journal, Volume 7.

She practiced law in southern California for 8 years before moving to
Vancouver, Washington in January 2001.  Prior to becoming an attorney she was a litigation paralegal for 7 years.   She was admitted to practice in California in December 1992, Oregon in October 2001 and Washington in August 2002.

Her background includes medical research technician at USC School of Medicine.  She is an active
member of the California, Oregon and Washington State Bar's Family Law Sections, Multnomah Bar Association and the Clark County Bar Association.

She received her certificate in mediation from Forrest Mosten in 2011.  She completed Guardian ad Litem training, Title 26 (Washington) in May 2011. She attends most annual family law conferences in Oregon and Washington, and completed advanced family law training in California in 2009 and 2011.

Her practice is moving towards more mediation and less litigation, as a way to reduce the stress families experience while undergoing a major change, such as a divorce.  Mediation is a way to keep your families' dirty laundry out of court.  It is said that divorce is 60% emotional and 40% technical.  The mediation process allows you to have a constructive conversation when communication has broken down. Mediation allows you the safety of having the painful conversations away from the public forum.  Most of the battles in court center around the children.  Too many times the parties are intent to sling mud at each other instead of asking themselves, "what is best for our children and how can we productively move past this painful part of our lives?"

In her free time she enjoys traveling with her husband, playing her violin with the Clark College Symphony Orchestra, and gardening.
